Public Safety:
Drone do pose some risk. Imagine tens of thousands of drones buzzing
around delivering packages. What happens if they collide or a strong wind or downdraft,
knocks them into a building, a pole or a person? What happens if a flock of birds
crashes into one? The answer to all these questions is the package may not get
delivered, but more importantly the drone crashes somewhere and maybe on or
into someone. Rotors can hurt, injure or even kill. The heaver the package the bigger the drone,
with large rotors and more fuel making a bigger crash.
Fuel Consumption:
Driving
on the ground uses less energy than flying. Flying in a fixed wing aircraft
uses less energy than rotary aircraft. The cost in energy and the size of
aircraft needed will be large.
Noise Pollution:
One
drone is a novelty and fun to watch, but big drones with large rotors will
quickly be band in cities because of the noise pollution. Would you want a large
drone with large rotors coming to your front door?
Guidance and Control:
Self-driving
cars are within 5-10 years. Remember that self-driving cars only needs to drive in
2 dimensions. Aircraft particular helicopters need to drive in 3 dimensions.
Self driving cars do not take into account wind directions, down draft and
birds flying into them. How will the drone manage heavy rain, hail, and ice?
The guidance will actually need to be more sophisticated than a commercial
aircraft which fly’s set routs with set landing patterns and sophisticated
sensors both on the ground and in the air to assist navigation. Further if the aircraft has problems highly trained pilots can take over.
A Better Solution
A
self driving car with a two footed robot as built in Japan. The running robot
takes the package from the truck and delivers it to the door. Lower energy
requirements and less traffic because it can deliver at night when the streets are empty. The robot could
have a shock sensor for self protection.
